An observation of being a fan for the past 6 years. You notice a pattern but not everyone is like this.

• The internet has resulted in making more arguments between fans than in person because of misreading people’s words into negativity.
• Knowing an idol’s profile, majority of their discography and timeline of certain events is a basic thing as a fan or Koreaboo.
• Fans dress similar to K-Pop idol’s style e.g. Jeremy Scott, Creepers, Doc Martens as well as a mixture bright and colourful combination of clothes.
• There is no age range in K-Pop so people need to stop saying it’s 12-14 year olds listening to the music, that just seems to be the general age people start commenting and arguing.
• A little fanservice goes a long way e.g fanfiction, fanart, FMVs
• Giving criticism to someone’s fanfiction, dance or singing cover results in that person feeling attacked instead of listening to the feedback being given to them.
• K-Pop is not to be taken seriously. Yet there are so many analysis and criticism within the fandom, you wonder if people actually just enjoy the music anymore.
• From knowing quite a few people in the London K-Pop fandom, you come to realise almost  everyone is mutual with almost each other. Same things happens on tumblr or Twitter.
• The title of “biggest fan” is stupidity and people only use it to annoy another person.
• Fans believe their idols are better than the likes of Justin Bieber or One Direction. All pop group/singer fandoms are all just as bad as each other.
• There is no hierachy in the fandom. Some of us support by buying as much merchandise as we can, some of us have seen idols at a concert, some of us have met and taken photos with them. None of us are more superior than another person in this fandom.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about my life. Before 2013 ends, I have various things to do.

On April 6th, I found a job but I’ve got a lot to study.  Firstly from January to March, I did an internship at ReadWave. It was fun but it was not a job. You can get an internship there! Here is the link! Now I work at Tinc! This company is good, flexibility, also the manager is a nice person. People who want a job, apply! But because it is far and the shop closes at 10 o’clock, think I may quit. I’m thinking about working there for 3 months.  Everyone, what should I do?

University is good. Last week was the beginning of the last semester. I must go 3 days a week! Also now that I work, I’ll become busy. This time’s essay was hard to write! I’m a second year University student but will University work become harder? After the last exam, my sensei wasn’t happy! From now on, I must study!

In 2012, did a lot of J-Pop dance covers. This year I want to do various dances! Last week, I did my first C-Pop dance cover.  I want to do more collaborations! Maybe 3 collabs?

This blog, NyNyOnline…what do I do with this blog? Last month the stats went down. (-__-) From May, I think it will get better. I want to turn the blog into a business. Before going to Korea, I’m thinking of making business cards. From now I want more Japanese, Korean and English contacts. Worldwide too.  Will there be anyone?

• Azumanga Daioh 

Genre: Slice of Life, School Life, Girls’ Friendship, Comedy- No Romance &  Not “Moe” & Not “ecchi”

Azumanga Daioh is a nice relaxing kind of anime which has a skit based template to its comedy. Unlike a lot of other girls/ girls school  series, the story isn’t really about romance or “being cute” (moe).  Azumanga Daioh is about friends who have fun while living their everyday life.  The comic timing is excellent and the all female main cast each have their own different personalities which really does create a nice mix of situations. The humour isn’t slapstick or crude so it is perfect to watch with anyone- your grandparents, boyfriend, girlfriend, brother, sister, cat-  or just by yourself. Available on DVD from Amazon.com.

• Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Genre: Sci Fi/Cyberpunk, Philosophical, Cop Series

GITS SAC 1st GIG lets you see into a future of cyborgs, hackers,and political intrigues. It asks deep questions of what it truly means to be living in a technologically advanced and enhanced world.Prepare to enjoy excellent writing and depth in each and every episode. Technological concepts/talk and literary references add to the plot, and are not just for cheap cred.The depth in writing and nuances in the story make the series highly re-watchable and enjoyable during each re-watch.
Although it has many related titles before and after it,  GITS SAC 1st GIG is excellent by itself – and stands alone (sorry for the pun) as do the other related titles. SAC 1st GIG  is also a recommended starting point to enter the narrative world of Ghost in the Shell.

• Bubblegum Crisis 2032

Genre: Cyberpunk/Sci-Fi, Robot/Mecha/Power Suit, Cop Series

A fun and exciting series featuring a dynamic all female crime fighting team – fighting cyborgs in special robotic suits. It is a solid cop drama which manages to include good and interesting story arcs with a touch of technology added in. This is one of the best examples of the cyberpunk genre together with the GITS movies and series.  The memorable female characters also carry the story well while the suit designs are also quite cool and work well. Expect a very fun and mostly action driven experience that will leave you feeling good and wanting more. For more from the 2032 cast, Bubblegum Crash is recommended but that said- Bubblegum Crisis 2032 is still hands down the best out of all the related series.

• Beyblade (Season 1 – 3

Genre: Science fantasy, comedy-drama, sports

It’s a childhood favourite of mine. I first watched the anime at 9 and loved the concept of it from watching it the first time. Although it seems that you have to believe it to see them, that’s what makes it so popular to young children. The first generation cast (2001-2003) of Beyblade are likable characters and the  storyline added some good plot twists with Kai’s past being a favourite among many, BEGA or even Team Psykick. It is hard to find something that I would change about this anime but if I had a choice, I’d change Hilary for a female beyblader to be an original Bladebreaker member. Purchase a DVD either on Amazon or on ebay however it is difficult to buy a box collection of the whole three seasons.

 

• NANA:

Genre: Drama, Romance, Music, Comedy, Slice of Life, Tragedy

NANA leaves an impact on you as you follow the main characters, both girls called Nana. You begin to care for the girls when situations are thrown their way. All of the characters blend together despite their differences. Suspense is in every episode and since you want to know what happens to the characters towards the end, you won’t stop watching. Each episode leaves more and more suspense. Purchase the whole boxset collection here.

 

• Persona 4: The Animation:

Genre: Urban fantasy, Murder mystery, Comedy-drama, Slice of Life, Action-Adventure, Romance

Why are we not surprised guys? Morning Musume 12th generation auditions have been announced. Like number244 said ‘the heart of the group is the graduation/audition system.’

I love every time there’s an announcement from him, his version of their song comes through. This time it’s Help Me!

You may have seen me comment the same response on some of your blogs about this but my response to this still stays the same. The news will always shocks us all but as usual, we all just get it over and pick a favourite from the auditions right? Then again for the past three generations, I just waited for the finalists to be called.

What does it mean to have a 未来少女(Mirai Shoujo)/Future Girl/s?

It gives me the impression that the audition is to add a girl/s that will stay for more than just a few years in the group and help stablise Morning Musume’s sale success in the distant future. Perhaps after the 6th generation go, UFA might be looking to focus more on getting another spotlight member for this achievement. I was going to suggest a leadership type but that role might be given to the likes of Mizuki and Haruna who seem to be really good during announcements and TV shows.

I hope there are two girls this time, not one. I liked the pattern (3rd, 7th and 11th are all one-member gen) so I don’t want to believe the title will focus on getting just one extra girl into Morning Musume.

We all say “not another generation” but then again, Morning Musume is change and what I look forward to. It will always change with the amount of generations and eras and we as fans adapt quickly to it. Yes, it’s not necessarily needed since we’ve all probably grown used to the current members of the Colourful Era but I would still welcome in a new girl/s. But I hope they focus upon pushing the other 9th and 10th generation members  before the 12th generation. I am loving the fact Ayumi and Mizuki are getting more spotlight though with Riho and Sakura. And yes, I am also one of those people who hope that Cuca auditions or at the most gets through. She’s really good for her age as a dancer and she always seem to wear the most cutest outfits to fit the concepts of the songs.

• Getting stuck and needing some help

The development of video walkthroughs is really helpful these days compared to the written ones I used to follow in the past. However, I don’t  have the time to figure them out and reminisce memories on how long it took me I think some people these days are impatient and don’t have the time to figure out the puzzles or get stuck.

• Economical problems a.k.a Money:

When 360 and PS3 games first came out, the prices in comparison to the PS2 games we all used to buy has increased. I remember when games were around £20-£40 yet newly released games price are now £30~£50. I don’t think most of us have the money to spend it on so many games that we are intrigued about.  Plus some games are just better off watching than spending money on e.g. Amy. That’s why I am grateful to YouTube and the millions of uploaders who upload walkthroughs.

• Preview a game before buying it:

Would this not spoil a game for you? A few people in the YouTube comment section watch walkthroughs before purchasing a game to see what the gameplay is like. Looking at a trailer or taking a look at reviews e.g. AngryJoeShow would be better than spoiling the whole game for yourself. Perhaps it is okay to take a look at the gameplay or graphics of a game but not to spoil the entire story of it.

• I do not have the console:

A lot of appealing games are not made for the 360 so I turn to YouTube if I can’t get them. Games such as Ni no Kuni, Heavy Rain and many others that I would like to play are not available on the Xbox 360 and that sucks. Then there are some games which are exclusive to certain consoles e.g. Bayonetta 2 is coming out on Wii U, Pokémon X and Y are coming out on 3DS. No-one saving has the money to have all the latest consoles and personally, I’m not going to go out of my way to get a PS3 or to a friend’s house just to play it.

• Time

Also another reason would be time which may apply to most people. There is rarely enough time for me to sit down and play video games for hours as I could do as a child while I’m at university or work but I’m trying to pick that back up again when I have some spare time. A lot of us have to juggle responsibilities so you have to wonder if there is enough time to play video games but it also depends on the person.

The only downside to walkthroughs though is the amount of commentary that people have in their videos. No-one wants to hear the player’s voice over the game characters. You can miss vital points in a game’s cutscene because the uploader thought it would be a good idea to talk over a character and give their funny input.

Does anyone else watch game walkthroughs for these reasons? Or are watching walkthroughs not okay?

“Annoying”

• Switching a character’s point of view person: Really? Do writers do this to piss people off? There have been too many stories where I have seen this happen and the writer (and most of the readers) think this is okay. It puts me off because they start off with a good plot and the writing is done so well in 3rd person then suddenly out of blue, 1st person view! And I don’t even like reading 1st or 2nd person stories, they tend to be badly written. (Note: With POV, I am referring to a change in point of view e.g. 1st person, 3rd person. With narrative, I am referring to multiple characters perspectives or views but using the same POV)
• Constant use of another language’s vocabulary throughout the story: This refers to Fanfiction more. Respectful terms e.g. sensei, dongsaeng, are fine with me. It’s when they turn into sentences or every start of the word becomes Japanese or Korean that I cannot stand. We understand you want to add a few language terms into the story but it can really but a person off.
• Not displaying to the readers what is the difference between flashback/past and the present: I don’t know how to shorten this but this is a problem with some writers stories. People feel confused when an author writes the story and switches from one scene to another. Please fix that!
• Overuse of formatting: The overuse of bold, italics and underline can be really annoying. You only need to do it to one word to emphasise . With paragraphs, it’s simple! Just separate them so readers are not confused.
• (FOR FANFICTION ONLY) Assuming they are all 12-15: No. There is a bigger demography of fanfiction writers out there.

“Don’t do it”

•  Extended author notes or summary: There is no need for this. Keep it short and sweet for your readers because you’re bound to annoy them by talking way too much. Also, adding your own input into the story is irritating.
• Characters are OOC. Create an OC: It’s really strange how out of character a writer can make someone especially if it’s fanfiction.
• All dialogue and no description: There isn’t much to say except how do you expect a reader to enjoy your story with only dialogue in it.
• Lack of emotive vocabulary: Said, said etc. It’s so dull. Try using this for help.

“I’ll let it pass”

• Bad Grammar/Spelling: Annoying yes, but we are not all perfect. I’d let it pass because even my spelling and grammar isn’t on point and a majority of writers’ stories that I have read are similar too.
• Short chapters: It’s not that bad unless the chapter is under 300 words then it’s a waste.
• Lemons without plot: Sometimes if it’s written well, I’ll excuse it e.g. Special Delivery
• Silent readers: It’s not that bad but I would like for readers of any stories they read to comment on my story and tell the writers what you think and (maybe if you like critiscing) what needs to be improved. We appreciate any feedback you give us!
• Mary-Sues: This is mostly aimed at fanfiction really and I was even told when I started my Naruto fanfiction that my female protagonist was Mary-Sue and needed to tone her character down. That’s why this doesn’t bother me much because the writer can always tone their character’s abilities and make them more of a fictional character.

What makes you annoyed about a story? Any pet peeves that anyone else has at all?

Konno posted on his blog a short while ago about the issues with shows such as We Got Married  and it made me think that there wasn’t enough pointing out about the show. Not only in We Got Married do people see it as a dreamlike world for themselves, but also Mnet Scandal and The Romantic & Idol. These shows have similar elements but also bring a lot of issues with it. Netizens, fans and other viewers don’t seem to realise how sucked they get into watching these shows and thinking it’s a reality.

Of course I’m not talking about every person who watches We Got Married. Most of us enjoy watching it and realise it is not real.

What is We Got Married? 

We Got Married is a South Korean reality variety show that pairs up Korean celebrities to show what life would be like if they were married. 

The issue?

Shipping is a must when it comes to pairing idols on WGM. As Konno pointed out, everything is fabricated and all the people are actors. They are not reality stars so most of the things on the shows are scripted and they won’t end up together in real life like many fans of Khuntoria believed would happen. There were comments to the situation of Oh Yeon Soo and Lee Joon where the netizens were saying stuff like, “It’s so fake now” and “the show has ruined it for me.” Fans have to realise it’s all for show, ratings and just to bring entertainment to the viewers.

Because I couldn’t find a non-biased picture!

What is Mnet Scandal? 

Mnet scandal is a show where they choose non-celebrities to date with certain idols for a week, on how they choose the person is unexplained but it is believed through a competition where the person is lucky to get picked.

The issue?

Jealousy is a common thing for fans. Although the show follows the celebrity dating a non-celebrity for a week, fans who watched this show in 2009 were raging with envious remarks towards the non-idols who took part with their favourites e.g. Nichkhun  But imagine the sasaengs? It could be worse. The protection for the non-idol on the show is something I want to know about. How protected is the non-idol from the fans finding out who they are or getting their contact details and threatening them?

This isn’t a spolier of the end of the show so don’t worry!

What is The Romantic & Idol? 

The Romantic & Idol is a reality TV program based off of The Romantic that involves K-Pop idols from popular groups who spend 4 days and 3 nights together experiencing movie style romance.

The issue?

Just a side note but did anyone notice the show is for idols who are in groups that are irrelevant or becoming irrelevant (in regards to the eyes of an international fan, that is)? You’ve got to admit it’s slightly true.

But from what I’ve noticed when this show aired was that the fandom (or rather the international side) has calmed down in comparison to the previous shows. Calmer, but still pairing idols up like in WGM. When it comes to idols dating (or getting married in Sunye’s case), it’s not that much of a big deal. Thing is after the Hyungsik interview, how real or fake are the person’s feelings to another idol for a fan to believe? This is just another behind the scenes theory that we may never know. We don’t know whether they actually talked to each other or got along with each other at all.

Shows like these are just one of the reasons why fans live in a daydream world and create OTP’s but it also gives awareness of an idol and also new found anti’s. Along with that, these shows create a lot of fanservice. Fan service means fans give their idols money in exchange for more fan service. Then they get ideas to create fanfiction and share it with other fans who ship that same pairing (I’m not speaking for everyone mind you). To the people who try and give fanfiction to your idols as gifts – there are boundaries within the fandom and an idol, this is one of them. It’s not a bad thing to create OTP’s and wonder what it would be like for your favourite idol to go out with another but when it reaches a new found level of delusion, it should stop before that happens.

Anyways please let me know what you think about the issues in relationship variety shows?

In life, there are things that are usually more popular than others. People, events and even trends. In the music industry, this happens quite often with idols and artists being more successful than others and their companies given the spotlight too. In K-Pop, I think it’s the opposite where most fans focus upon the label of where the idols came from. The Big 3 companies (SM, JYP and YG) are an example of this being the most popular music labels in Korea.

After reading this article, I’ve noticed JYPE in the last few years has been in the decline. It used to be my favourite label of idols but 2PM and Wonder Girls are the only groups I like. Even these groups are slowly becoming irrelevant and the fault is in JYP and the company. Home to creating stars such as Rain, Wonder Girls and g.o.d, it looks like JYP may lose its reputation as a Big 3 company to other competitors. Well, at least that’s the way I see it.

The way I see it, their status came to my attention back in 2010. Not just because some of my favourite members of the company had left their groups (Jay Park and Sunmi of course), but there was a turning point that I and other fans saw towards the company, as if there was a decline in influence that started from then.

People forget that JYP is part of the big three not because of money. The big 3 aren’t the big 3 because of what they earn, to think that is completely silly and ignoring their history but the influence and everything they did for K-pop. Money is something JYPE never had much of compared to the others, people seem to not know how small of a company JYP actually is. Not only in a building itself, but the staff too.
In fact, they always earn way less than SM and YG even when the Wonder Girls and Rain were at the top. Plus JYPE is not doing as bad as people would like to think. They are free from debt since miss a debuted and they still sell a lot but physical copies were never their strength. Only 2pm sells considerable well when it comes to that but JYPE was always stronger on online charts.
JYPE physical sales are always so weak, it’s a joke really. They really need to get their shit together, I am getting so angry as a fan, they need a new CEO and marketing team as soon as possible.

The sales and profits are not really something that makes JYP a Big Three company as lysblack has quoted above but the general international public do see it as something important however. SM and YG are promoting as much as they can with different ways of marketing their artists but what has JYP doing? With the way sales are in comparison, it’s showing. I’m not sure about the results of the 2nd half of 2012 but the 1st half shows JYPE’s profits as 1.1 billion in comparison to SM (38.4) or YG (17.8). I’m not sure how it works with Cube, Big Hit and AQ but does a small amount of profit go to JYP at all? Hopefully someone can elborate on this since I’m not very knowledge in this area.

Now let’s talk about the groups.

Another thing I noticed is that there are so many newbies in JYP yet these days no-one really cares about new idols anymore (unless they really stand out). JJ Project was a good addition because there hasn’t been a debut of boys in JYP since 2AM and 2PM in 2008. There were rumours of them debuting into a 5 member group in late 2012, the same rumour that I have heard for the past 4 years… It just seems like JJ Project may stay a duo forever and never comeback.

In Korean mainstream music its mostly K-Pop or ballad, but let’s be honest K-Pop groups are more popular. So why bring out a ballad duo and a soloist? Baek Ayeon and 15+ are talented yes and the world definitely wants more talent than popularity. But in Hallyuwood where popularity and money is more important, will they be remembered as much as JOO is?

He’s not new but San. E needs to make a comeback. What happened to him making a comeback? It’s been almost 2 years since he last released anything new – and he produces his own material.

What will JYPE do with these new people?

Suzy and Nichkhun seem to be the biggest moneymakers for JYP but promotion and marketing seems like a problem in the company for some of their groups.  Let’s talk about miss A whose company AQ has shown this problem. They were doing well at the start with Bad Girl Good Girl – Breathe era. Then in 2011, the focus became more about Suzy and less on the other members. It just felt like such the other three were wasted talent. I hope AQ will think more about promoting all the members of miss A and not just Suzy. They need their own show similar to Welcome to Wonderland or WG S1-3 if you ask me.

Since 2010, I feel like 2PM have been pushed more to be the company’s biggest moneymaker group with their concerts and advancement to Japan but their music quality has dropped a little. Lately, 2PM have been quite successful in Japan under other Korean idols such as SNSD and KARA. Japan may have more currency and  2PM do bring in the most money as a group but they need to make a comeback, the I-fandom is crying out for a comeback. Because of Nichkhun’s controversy and other projects, they were inactive in 2012. Hands Up turned out to be one of the best singles of 2011 for me, it attracted a lot of people’s attention but they needed more songs in the of their first album. I hope they will make more Pop/R&B songs in their upcoming third album like they did in their 2009 material.  In terms of promotion and marketing, I think they are okay but I wish we would have some word about 2PM Show Season 2 since getting Wild Bunny Ep. 8 is non-existent to everyone now. I still believe it was nice that Wooyoung had a solo album with good music but I would have liked to have had a solo albu from Minjun or Junho but it’s still Popularity > Talent fro what I a seeing.

With their counterparts, 2AM in my opinion are underrated but it’s probably better that way. They had a successful song period and no-one really pays much attention to them unless they are on variety and it’s Jokwon . I don’t think there is much else for me to say about them.  Jokwon’s solo flopped badly and could have had better tracks to promote.

And the Wonder Girls? Everytime someone talks about stopping the Wonder Girls’ promoting in America, I feel neutral to a person’s response to this because there was a lot of pros and cons towards their advancement and well, Wonder Girls turned out beneficial through their music but their title in Korea – to an international fan – seems to have dropped. Apart from a few mild successes, there was no real success that you could compare with Psy for example. After my previous post I wonder, what really will become of them? Solo promotions (I’m waiting for a YeBin album) I know but still…would disbandment be next after solo promotions? I worry…

One thing I would like to see be considered more in 2013 is JYPE considering letting their artists make their own songs as title tracks more. I would love to hear a title track by Junho, Minjun, San.E or even Yeeun. Title tracks gain more interest than album songs to a new audience. Once then a person moves their attention to the album tracks (but then again it does depend on the person).

Along with what Lysblack said in the quote above,  the company does seem to be getting their artists to have more schedules. Yoobin and Changsung have dramas going on, Taecyeon and Jinwoon are going on WGM while Yeeun, Minjun and Changmin are in a musical. Hopefully there will be more for the rest of the JYP Nation.

What will 2013 (and possibly the future) be like for JYP and it’s nation then?

So now you guys want to hear about the Kyary concert right? People have been waiting! Different people have different experiences so I’m going to tell you what I thought about the concert.

First of all, upon arriving at Islington whenever you go to a concert you always notice certain fans want to stand out with their love for the artist or idol and dress similar to them. Do you know how many people dressed in the Ponponpon outfits? I have no pictures but there was quite a few. Not only that but a few girls dressed up in Tsukema Tsukeru, Fashion Monster, gyaru or lolita style clothes. It’s nice to copy their fashion but when it’s snowing and half the girls are standing outside with their legs or arms exposed, I’m trying to wonder if they caught anything after the concert…

Now one thing that bothered me was the tickets said the concert would start at 7PM yet why did it start late? An hour and a half. Maybe there was problems with equipment or getting people in on time but I don’t give a damn. If the concert is supposed to start at 8:15, please put that on the tickets instead. The Islington arena is really small and can hold 600 people but people still felt the need to slyly go in front of you even though the stage is easy for everyone to see.

Nevertheless, I’m glad Kyary finally came out because I felt like I was waiting forever for her to come. She is really pretty and so adorable. Kyary performed all her singles along with songs from her new album and previous mini album. Her newest single, Ninjari Bang Bang was performed as well which is quite good.

Kyary Kids were amazing! I’m a bit sad that there was only two of them and two male dancers. At least they were juking it and I finally got to see them dance to Cherry Bon Bon. She did an encore of Tsukema Tsukeru which was nice. I wish the concert was longer than an hour and a half but then again she doesn’t have enough material and she’s only one girl who can only perform for so long.

And for the people saying she must be expressionless on stage, she wasn’t. Kyary was smiling and had plenty of expressions on her face. It’s too bad she didn’t derp once.

At the end, I gave one of the staff a letter to give to Kyary so I hope she received it. Sorry for my rubbish fancam below. People would not let a 5″2 person see clearly and were greedy to get closer and closer despite the place was tiny anyways. My friend had some girl try and push her forward as well.
