15 years of Pokémon

This is for the anime, not the game (which came out in 1996). But I am still going to talk about both.  I know I am late on the specific date. The game was released on February 27th 1996 and the anime was released on April 1st 1997.

We all know the story right? And the differences between the anime and game? Good. Then let’s continue…

Pokémon as of 28 May 2010, has reached more than 200 million copies in sales for the video games and there are now 18 movies with five generations of Pokémon. The history has been marked at times by rivalry with the Digimon media franchise that debuted at a similar time. It’s got to be one of the first animes that is not based on the mangas. I’m even interested that there are still Pokémon trading cards.

My first discovery of Pokémon was when I was about 4 or 5. At the time, I thought it was brightly coloured than most of the cartoons I had watched then (even though the anime is blinding now). Honestly, I have never really liked Ash, he chooses the same Pokémon as me in Season 1 if I played Yellow (Butterfree, Pikachu, Bulbusaur, Charmander, Pidgetto and Squirtle) but I usually dump Butterfree in the PC after I get Squirtle. But why Ash and not Red? Especially since the game came out first! The original cast is classic yes, but there are so many other trainers from the games that should have been the main after Ash finished up in Johto. Not that I don’t like Misty and Brock but how come it was not any other gym leaders than them? Like Erika and maybe an Elite Four would have been interesting. Because of that, I could actually believe that theory of Ash and Red are brothers though I’m not too sure about Ash’s coma.

I discovered the games after my dad brought me and my older sisters Pokémon Red and Blue. I slowly became addicted when I got Pokémon Yellow for my birthday, I must of been 6 or 7 at the time. The hype over Pokémon seemed to stop in the UK around 2001/2 when Gold and Sliver were released but I still continued to play the games. Since then, I have played at least one game in every gen except Black/White 2 which I cannot be asked because I am waiting for a Ruby and Sapphire remake version. I have always thought the games were better than the series even though storyline was the same except for Black/White. But this year, I started reading manga and I have no clue why I didn’t start reading it when I was really into manga back in 2008. It is so much better than the anime. My favourite games have to be Emerald and Crystal but White really interested me a lot perhaps because N is one of the best rivals in the games since Silver and Gary.

Also, has anyone ever heard of Pokémon Apokélypse? I still haven’t seen the movie but the trailer is enough for me two years on.

Tell me your experience of Pokémon guys! Do you like the anime or games? Or both?

  1. An interesting point of view and ofcourse the game is 10x better than the anime series because of the intended audience. If you clearly can see that they are making Ash dumber and weaker in every new series more like a reboot every 4-5 yrs for the new generation to adapt.

Everyone speaking of why not the manga characters instead of ash. The answer is because Satoshi is the person behind Pokemon creation so obviously they cant change him its more of a way of gratitude and respect for this man. I would like to see Ash growing up at least 15-16 yrs old and more serious battle. They did an extreme bad move in Black and White Anime series first by removing brock and making Team Rocket “Too serious”. The anime grew too dull but now they are slowly fixing it by bring the old generation back.

  2. The very first episode of the anime I watched was the one where Pikachu gets sick because of the Magnemite and Ash catches Muk. It’s also so hard to choose a favorite game, but I’d have to go with Gen 3 just cause it’s the one I’ve played the most. I, too, eagerly await that Ruby/Sapphire remake.

  3. Always nice to know another Pokemon fan! Thanks for reading my post about Pokemon too =)

BTW, Pokemon Apokelypse is not a real movie – despite how realistic it is, it’s just a fan-made trailer. It would be awesome if it was an actual movie though XD
