When did you get into Asian Pop | Results

The most recent poll that I did was to see when people started getting into Asian Pop and the results surprised me quite a bit.

But I guess since this is worldwide, it should be different.

In my community, I have met people who got into K-Pop around the 2008 – 2010 era when, in my opinion, it grew popular but the genre also started to deteriorate and grow in controversies. However, that is only the second most popular.

The most popular is 2004 – 2007. Usually the people I have met in my community who listen to C-Pop or J-Pop got into it at this time. Which goes to show most of you readers got into Asian Pop the same time as me.

Old school generation are after that and it seems like 2000 – 2003 have a few votes. Only a few people voted “A few months ago” which goes to show some people are not newbies into Asian Pop which I like.

The reason why I did this was to see if most of my readers are a growing number of new fans or been listening to it for years.

In your community, how many people got into Asian Pop in what year?

  1. This was a pretty interesting poll :) I was expecting most people to say 2008-2010, especially cause that’s when kpop had like a mega popularity boom thanks to all those hook songs (nobody, gee etc.) I don’t particularly think genre deteriorated in quality but it definetly has less variety in terms of sub genres (like different types of pop instead of just electronic/dance) and exposure of groups. I got into K-pop (and J-Pop) around 2003/2004 right when DBSK was debuting so it’s pretty interesting to see the industry change. In my community though, most people started in with J-pop around that time since they were coming in from the whole Anime/Drama fad, and then started like K-pop around 2008 :) .
I am wondering though why you say u like that most people didn’t answer “a few months ago”. Do u have a specific reason? I don’t mean to be offence, I’m just wondering cause I’ve heard this from several long time K-pop listeners :)

    • I am glad about that because talking to people who have been into Asian music the same time as you will have listened to more sub-genres than someone who has come into it a few months ago. Although, a person like that could catch up and find out more I have had the experience of meeting people who got into K-Pop a few months ago and are ignorant and irritates long-time fans.

With the example of DBSK in K-Pop, loads of new fans say they are old, do not know who they are and tell Cassies to move on because they have broken up. They shouldn’t do that if they got into K-Pop so soon. Some new fans even don’t care about the history of K-Pop from artists such as H.O.T, Fin.KL, SES, g.o.d etc. That’s why I wrote that. :)

      • True True :) I’ve also run into a couple of new fans that really don’t know much about K-pop and look down on all the veteran groups, when they’re the ones that made it possible for the genre to be as popular as it is today, but I think the main thing is alot of people are just following K-pop right now as a fad and not cause they really love the music or anything…it’s kind of dissapointing but that’s how it seems to me right now :(
The fandom is just a little messed up right now, too many fanwars at what not :/

  2. I got into Asian Pop like mid 2004, especially J-Pop and C-Pop. The reason for me was the increase in the people around me becoming interested in mangas and anime. But I was never interested in it until my brother watched InuYasha and I loved the ending theme songs. I began listening to BoA, Utada, Ayumi, Koda, Kokia, etc. and I was really fascinated by their culture and how different their music was from American pop culture. Then around 2006 I really got into K-Pop and lately I have been listening to more K-Pop, mostly after the huge explosion. But my love for it did dwindle a little after all the artists focused mainly on dance, auto-tune and all the things that are more popular in music these days, but there are still a handful of talented and amazing groups and singers. I still keep up with my favorite J-Pop and C-Pop artists though. Around my area there really isn’t that much people that listen to Asian pop. They always use the excuse of, “I can’t understand them.” But a lot of my friends are actually taking a liking to Big Bang and SNSD (Especially “Gee”) which I think is good but also bad because the world of K-Pop is already too crowded. This was a really good poll and I did expect 2008-2010 to be the highest too.
