Does Perfume ever sing live?

チョコレイト・ディスコ

From the video above, all I can hear is Ayaka Nishiwaki (or A~chan as fans call her) shouting “Disco” but apart from that part, everything sounds exactly like the MV.

So, here’s a question: Does Perfume ever sing live?

Also, are their voices the same as their singing voices? LOL. Just joking, I can tell from the way Ayano shouts that it’s not. ^_^ But do they use autotune even in live performances then?

At first I hated Perfume because of their style and the fact of using autotune ALL THE TIME but after hearing Polyrthymn (ポリリズム), I really loved it and now they are my #3 favourite J-Pop girl group (after Morning Musume and Berryz Kobo).

I think I need to see a video of Perfume sing a song that’s not theirs and singing it live so if we can see if they can really sing live. Can someone please show me the one?

And what are your opinion on Perfume?

  1. I love Perfume but you’re right, it never sounds like they are singing during lives. Maybe it is because they use a lot of vocoder in the studio and they want it to sound the same onstage. Who knows.

  2. They sang this live, but that’s about it :P They also sang Baby cruising Love once, and they also sing for Perfume and Jenny. I wish they did it more, but it doesn’t sound too good with songs that are loaded down with vocoder :/

  3. I hated Perfume too, at first, because of all the vocoder. But I got used to their style after a while. My guess is that their songs use so many vocal distortion techniques that they don’t sound live when they actually sing.

  4. Well this is an old post, and while they have done some live singing especially in their early career, here’s a brand new live of Kokoro no Sports with natural live singing:

I have nothing against a good show with lipsyncing because their robotic style is an aesthetic solution and it’s usually weighed out by intense coreography and lightshow.

  5. I’m late! But I wanted to say I appreciate your article. At first I was a bit set aback by Perfume’s style, too. However, they’re my favorite JPop (j-electropop) girl group now! I don’t really mind the vocoding since I understand it’s part of their concept, and not just something to follow a trend of putting random dubstep or autotune in any pop song. xD But I was really wondering about how they sound normally and I found my answer with the replies on this article. ^^ I even thought that maybe they should release an album with acoustic versions of some of their songs, haha. But I guess it might sound weird with some songs that are designed to be electropop-ish and suit the robotic voices more. Anyway, overall, I think their concept is very well done.

  6. I stumbled on this today and was pleasantly surprised. PERFUME ACTUALLY DIDN’T LIPSYNC *as much…actually just a couple versus* But still They sang live on their own song and it wasn’t terrible and it wasn’t like terrible but Im glad they went out of their confort zone! They should do this more often if their going to market themselves around the world now since their label has changed and their sound is getting abit more western for maybe a try at the american market? Although abit skeptical I feel that perfume should try. but America is a tough country to make it musically, alot singers get alot of *poop* thrown at them for using autotune or lipsyncing live cause it doesn’t feel authentic. Another issue is the fact that Asian music is alot different from american/westerner music so its going to be a hard sell to begin with. but hopefully it wont be the same for Perfume. I love them too much for them to be ridiculed for being just a Japanese girl group who are record studio girls and can dance well! Bring on the Perfume!
